In 2017 the Journal of Diabetes Research reported on a study showing a healthy intake of protein, especially plant protein, was linked with high muscle mass in elderly people who had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. The study was carried out at the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Kyoto, Japan. A total of 168 elderly people with Type 2 diabetes were included in the study. The participants who ate more significant amounts of protein, especially vegetable protein, had higher levels of muscle mass.
